Beneath the cloak of darkness, between the stroke of midnight and the wee hours of 2:15 am, aggressors unleashed a fusillade of gunfire from an elevated perch onto Naranseina village, singling out a security bastion below. As Manipur drew its electoral proceedings to a close, tragedy struck with two CRPF members perishing and two sustaining injuries in an apparent assault within Bishnupur district, casting a shadow just days before the anniversary of the Kuki-Meitei discord.
The assault materialized amidst the cover of night, with gunfire raining down from an elevated position, a detonation further exacerbating the situation, leaving four security personnel grievously wounded. Reports suggest the utilization of a crude “pumpi gun” in the attack. Among the casualties were Sub-Inspector N Sarkar and Head Constable Arup Saini, while Inspector Jadav Das and Constable Aftab Das suffered injuries, their duty revolving around the protection of the IRB camp, now subject to an intensive manhunt.
Nestled 2 kilometers distant from the hills, in close proximity to the Upper Canal, the besieged camp had been under heightened surveillance since the tumult of last May, an enduring testament to the region’s fragility.
