On Tuesday, the police apprehended Riyaz Ahmed, an active member of the notorious terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), operating in the Kupwara region of Jammu and Kashmir. What makes this arrest particularly significant is that Riyaz Ahmed is believed to be a retired Army soldier. The New Delhi Railway Station police station successfully carried out the arrest, shedding light on the alarming issue of individuals with military backgrounds turning to extremist organizations. This development exemplifies the challenges faced by security forces in combating terrorism, as even former military personnel can be vulnerable to radicalization.
LeT Terrorist arrested in Delhi
According to the police, Riyaz is believed to be a key member of the recently uncovered terror module in Kupwara district. Alongside Khursheed Ahmad Rather and Ghulam Sarwar Rather, Riyaz was allegedly involved in a plot to carry out attacks in the region.
The police stated that Riyaz played a role in conspiring with terrorist handlers across the Line of Control (LOC) to receive weapons and ammunition. Specifically, these supplies were sent by LeT terrorist handlers Manzoor Ahmad Sheikh and Qazi Mohammad Khushal, who operated from across the border.
On February 4th, the police received specific information from investigation agencies in Jammu and Kashmir regarding Riyaz’s involvement in the terror module case. He was wanted in connection with the arrest of five individuals and the recovery of incriminating materials, including 5 AK rifles (short), 5 AK magazines, and 16 short AK rounds.
The authorities were informed that Riyaz, who had been evading capture, would arrive at New Delhi Railway Station in the early hours of Tuesday. Acting on this tip-off, the police arrested him today.
They also seized a mobile phone and a SIM card from his possession.
Riyaz has been detained under appropriate legal provisions, and the concerned police station in Jammu and Kashmir has been informed for further necessary action.
